We just want passable, safe sidewalks

The article (

Yes, there were people who spoke on both sides of the issue, but 25 people spoke in favor of the ordinance while only eight spoke against. So while the article quoted both sides equally and led with an image of people protesting, those of us who attended the meeting know that the sentiment in the room was overwhelmingly in favor of this ordinance.

Neither the meeting or proposed ordinance are about homelessness. Some who spoke against it tried to turn it into an issue of poverty, but this is not the case. The sidewalks downtown can barely accommodate those walking on them (especially in the summer and holidays), and there is simply not room for individuals to be sitting or lying down.

Also, when people sit in groups on the sidewalk it can often feel intimidating. I have had clients, friends, employees and even my 12-year-old stepson voice their discomfort about groups sitting on downtown sidewalks.

Durango is a very generous community and merchants downtown give repeatedly to organizations that provide services to those in need. We are not uncaring or heartless people; we just want our sidewalks to be passable and feel safe.
