We must learn how to respond to hatred

The Durango community must become informed about the recent occurrence of a hate crime in Durango which was initially ignored by authorities and led to the departure of a Jewish family from our community.

Swastikas were painted on the home of a Jewish family living in Three Springs twice in recent weeks. The first episode was reported to Three Springs management. No action was taken.

The second episode was reported to the Durango Police Department who chalked it up to juvenile mischief and took no action. Inaction in the face of repeated hate crimes is unconscionable. The family left their teaching jobs and the Durango area due for fear of their safety.

As a community, we must be vigilant in reporting evidence of hate crimes. Our Police Department must be educated about the appropriate investigation of such crimes. We must use this opportunity to alert ourselves and educate our children about the existence of hatred in its many forms. We must speak out against injustice in our community.
