Today, April 8, I was out in front of my house on east 32nd Street. A car turned from 32nd onto East Third Avenue and sped excessively from 32nd Street north to the 33rd Street river put-in, easily going 40 mph or more.
As the car sped by, three little children and two adults came out of the alley onto East Third Avenue. It was providence that a disaster did not occur.
I called the police, who talked to the driver and gave her a warning.
This street is residential and yet has a high volume of traffic due to the river put-in. The area also has many small children. Speeding down East Third Avenue happens frequently.
I have lived in this neighborhood 10 years and we as a neighborhood have voiced multiple complaints over the years, yet our complaints seemingly fall on deaf ears. We applied for speed bumps and were told we were approved. This occurred years ago. The city never put the speed bumps in nor does this street have a speed limit sign.
We need signage that has a speed limit of 15 mph and warns of children at play and we need at least two speed bumps. What will it take; the death of a child?
This issue needs to be addressed before the summer masses invade our neighborhood.
