I’ve chatted briefly with both major candidates in the La Plata County sheriff’s contest. There’s quite a difference between them in demeanor, outlook and experience that is also reflected in their campaign websites.
Sheriff Sean Smith, the incumbent, has a bachelor’s degree in public safety administration and previous experience in the Army and U.S. Department of Justice. Most recently, Smith and his officers had to handle the problems of the 416 Fire and subsequent flooding, a situation that will continue for some time.
Deputies received well-deserved praise for their efficiency from members of the public during the fire and its aftermath while Smith was recognized for “Outstanding Leadership” by the Rocky Mountain Incident Team commanders.
In his first three years as sheriff, Smith has saved the county several million in tax dollars, obtained valuable surplus equipment for the department that saves the county additional money, and has updated the technology in the department.
One is hard-pressed to uncover what his opponent would do to improve on Smith’s record. This is but one reason why Sheriff Smith received the endorsement of the Durango Lodge No. 8 Fraternal Order of Police for re-election rather than his opponent.
Sheriff Smith’s accomplishments serve all of La Plata County well. We need him to continue for another term.
