We need the ‘For the People Act’

The House is about to vote in support of HR1, the For the People Act, then it moves on to the Senate.

This bill is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to strengthen our democracy and fair representation. It puts more power in the hands of everyday people by strengthening our voting rights, modernizing voter registration systems, improving election laws, making campaign contributions more transparent and curbing partisan gerrymandering.

Voters have already passed some of these reforms in red, blue and purple states and localities across the nation, often with bipartisan support, Colorado being one.

The FTPA addresses some of the more pressing issues facing our democracy – people are being shut out of the political process through restrictive voting laws and barriers to participation. More concerning is that some legislatures are actively trying to change laws so it’s easier to challenge and overturn election results after the fact. This could allow the party in control of state legislatures to nullify the will of voters.

This legislation will work to eliminate “dark money” in our elections, end gerrymandering and build a democracy that is fair and for the people.

Now is the time for Congress to take bold action to pass comprehensive democracy reform to strengthen our elections. Everyone deserves an equal voice in our democracy. The best way to defend democracy is to strengthen democracy. Ask our senators to vote “Yes” on the For The People Act and thank them for their support.
