We need to fix our broken tax system

I am now 75, looking back on my life and forward at my country’s future. Sadly, I see a country that loves its billionaires but not its ordinary families, nor its children, nor its elderly.

Our ultrarich pay 3.2% of their wealth in taxes while 99% of families pay 7.2% to 15% in taxes. Look at your tax returns. For some time as a single mom raising two children. I made at most $18 an hour, making ends meet by working lots of overtime. I know how those taxes hurt.

Yet 39 mega-corporations – reporting more that $122 billion in profit in 2019 – paid zero in taxes through loopholes and exemptions given by the then-majority lawmakers – zero!

Look at our families who critically need child care, early childhood education, health care, healthy food and the chance for advanced education. Look at our homeless and elders who can’t afford expensive “senior living.” They can hardly afford food!

It’s time to change this unfair system. Our 1% must pay their fair share, as they have always profited by tax-funded infrastructure, by an internet originally developed by tax-payer dollars by our military, by government support in trade agreements, etc., etc.

Now look at the Biden administration’s proposals for ordinary people in this country. Yes, he is asking for a two cent wealth tax that applies only to the very wealthiest. Our country needs this!
