We need zero-tolerance on homeless

I am tired of the schizophrenic and weak machinations of the Durango government on the issue of homeless and transients in the city.

I have one suggestion: Direct the police to enforce the law as it exists. The city would therefore enact a “zero tolerance” policy on the issue much like dozens of other cities have recently done.

The city should also recognize that the current U.S. Ninth Circuit homeless opinion – which itself is a piece of legal swiss cheese – is no more binding on Colorado than a ruling out of Russia.

As a retired attorney, I read that opinion. I have weekly contact with transients and homeless in my job. If anyone walked in my shoes for a few months they would agree with the above.

Finally, the city should be strong in responding to the ACLU.

Cowering in the face of that organization is the best way to assure that if a test lawsuit is brought, it will be against Durango.
