If you were thinking the threat of a storm would flatten Durango’s fifth annual winter salute to those who ride or walk to work, think again.
“Winter Bike to Work Day is still on – snow, sleet, wind or shine,” Amber Blake, the city of Durango’s director of transportation and sustainability, said in an email.
The main celebration will take place from 7 to 9 a.m. Friday in front of Durango Coffee Co., 730 Main Ave.
And perhaps there will be a weather window. The National Weather Service set the chance of precipitation Thursday night at 50 percent with snow accumulation of less than 1 inch possible. For Friday there’s a 60 percent chance of snow, but it’s predicted to come mainly after 3 p.m.
The city’s multimodal division is encouraging residents to ride, walk, carpool or bus on Friday and, along the way, to stop for a celebration of sustainable transportation.
In a news release, the city said there will be breakfast snacks from Bread, coffee and tea from Durango Coffee Co., a free micro-bike tune from San Juan Cycles and a presence from Trails 2000. Also, the city will offer free bike registration, discounted bus passes and raffle prizes, including Osprey products.
In the summer, the city has hosted a Clean Commute Week since 2010. Summer will also include a bike to work day.
