Week 6: Durango Demons YAFL goes 3-2

Third-graders also post shutout, now 5-1

Durango’s Young America Football League teams combined for another winning effort in Week 6.

Highlighting the action was the Demons fifth-graders, who came up on the winning end of 13-0 shutout against an Aztec team that dealt them their only loss of the season.

Jeric Baruch scored two touchdowns, and the menacing defensive combination of Maddox Bryant and Drwst Burns wreaked havoc on the Aztec offense. The Demons are now 5-1, and they’ll look to make it six wins in a row as they travel to take on Farmington this week at 3 p.m.

The third-graders also pushed their record to 5-1 with a 12-0 shutout against Bloomfield. They were led by the three-headed monster rushing attack of Cole Pontine (80 yards and a touchdown), Cully Feeney (15 yards rushing and a touchdown) and Wyatt Bartel (20 yards) running through the opposition.

Linkin Griego had an interception on defense, while Ryan Dugan and Tatum Kusar combined to make seven tackles. This week’s matchup is a 9 a.m. home game against Cortez.

Durango’s second-grade squad improved to 2-2 after a 27-7 blowout win against Bloomfield.

Tres Esquibel had a huge day for the Demons with 131 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Lance Baker added 23 rushing yards and was the go-to-guy on extra-point conversions as he pounded it home three times.

Cooper Mitchell was a one-man-gang on defense. Mitchell had five tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery. Braeden Brown and Lane Lyda also had fumble recoveries.

The second-graders will play Farmington at 9 a.m. this week.

The fourth- and sixth-grade teams were unable to pick up wins last week.

The fourth-grade Demons’ defense did well holding Aztec to single digits in a 9-0 loss. The offense had trouble recovering from a number of penalties and couldn’t put any points on the board.

They’ll try to get back on track at 11 a.m. in Cortez this week.

The sixth-graders had a rough week. They were beaten by rival Bayfield 26-6. Wil Hadrick, William Knight and Cole Matava did their best on offense, while Ashton Harrison, Bryson Kreeger and Cass Maloney made big plays on defense.

The sixth-graders will try to find the winning formula this week in an 11 p.m. game at Aztec.
