The county multi-event center and an exploration to find land and fund a new fairgrounds, started before there was a gift of 200 acres of land on the former Ewing Mesa. Many caring people came and went in the eight years I was involved. I personally want to thank each one who participated.
The commission formed because there were so many people upset about the mandatory islands and trees the city insisted on installing in the open space. They were unable to maneuver their trailers, trucks and animals around like they had before. It was decided by the La Plata Board of County Commissioner and the county manager, at that time, to find a bigger space. The Ewing Mesa land is a blessing, and we are so very grateful to the Katz family for their generosity.
It is a stab in my heart when I think about what could be, and some jealousy seeing the city completing the plan for its part. It will be the greatest thing ever for Durango. The city has a dedicated recreation tax, but the county does not. The $80 million (an estimate from 2017) was for a completely built-out center. It has to be built in increments.
If people still really want the new event center, we will have to vote for a tax. Please, weigh in!
