Weiss given her walking papers

FLC women’s soccer dismisses the RMAC Player of the Year
Sam Weiss won’t score any more goals for the Fort Lewis College women’s soccer team. FLC athletic director Gary Hunter confirmed Thursday that Weiss – the RMAC Player of the Year – has been dismissed from the program. She stands third all-time in points scored for FLC with 80. She scored 33 goals and had 14 assists in three seasons.

Star striker Sam Weiss won’t finish her stellar collegiate soccer career at Fort Lewis College.

Weiss, who was entering her senior season at FLC, has been dismissed from the team, FLC athletic director Gary Hunter confirmed Thursday night. There was no word as to why she was dismissed.

“She isn’t on the soccer team, but that is all we can say from a student confidentiality standpoint,” Hunter said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald.

Weiss, a 5-4 forward from Chandler, Ariz., ranks third in school history with 80 points after scoring 33 goals and recording 14 assists from 2011 to 2013. She won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Year award in 2013.

She led the Skyhawks in goals and points in 2012 and 2013. After scoring 17 goals and assisting on eight others in 2012, she had 10 goals and three assists in 2013.

FLC finished 16-6 and 10-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference before losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2013. The Skyhawks were 13-4-3 and 8-3-3 in the RMAC in 2012.

Jordan Hix, a redshirt sophomore, now is the leading returning scorer from last season. Hix had seven points on one goal and five assists.

FLC will open the 2014 season Sept. 4 against Texas Woman’s University.

FLC women’s soccer head coach Damian Clarke and Weiss both declined to comment Thursday.
