Weissl’s career path Leeds to England

Matthias Weissl has excelled playing international basketball since graduating Fort Lewis College in 2013. The former Skyhawks signed a two-year contract with Leeds Carnegie of the British Basketball League last week.

After a few years of playing professional basketball in his native country of Austria, Matthias Weissl is heading to England.

Weissl, a former Fort Lewis College men’s basketball player, agreed to a two-year contract with Leeds Carnegie of the British Basketball League.

“Within a short period of time of being around the people of the Leeds Carnegie community, it was very clear the organization is unmatched in its enduring success, work ethic and professionalism,” Weissl said in a news release. “I look forward to joining the family of players, coaches and community members as we work to add to the legacy that is Leeds Carnegie basketball.”

Weissl originally is from Salzburg, Austria, but he played his high school ball at Roaring Fork High School in Carbondale before signing with the Skyhawks.

After redshirting his freshman season, Weissl played four seasons at FLC from 2009 to 2013. The Skyhawks were 81-37 and earned two NCAA Tournament berths during his time playing under head coach Bob Hofman. He averaged 3.2 points per game while shooting 34.6 percent from 3-point range.

Weissl went on to play professionally in his hometown with BBU Salzburg in Austria. He led his league in scoring with 26.2 points per game while amassing averages of 6.1 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game. He set the league’s all-time record for points in a game with 41.

According to a Fort Lewis College press release, Weissl is one of three former Skyhawks currently playing professional basketball. Kirk Archibeque is playing in Poland, and Marcus Ayala is playing in Mexico.
