Once upon a time in a Durango long, long ago, Main Avenue was relatively calm, lined with homes, no stop lights, folks pretty much drove the speed limit. Our first responders may have been “underwhelmed” and got really good at playing five-card stud at the stations.
Fast forward to 2025, even a few years before. Often more than once a day a fire truck and ambulance speed toward Main, folks pull over, but of course there’s the idiot who thinks he or she can take on a fire truck.
Perhaps Main should be renamed the Durango 500? 32nd Street the Durango Drag Strip. So far no deer fatalities … so far.
Driving back to Durango from Cortez on Friday, traffic was stopped all the way back to town. A young man in an orange vest went to each vehicle and said we’d need to turn back and go home another way. There was a terrible accident not far from Cortez. One of the drivers was killed and the other driver and passenger were injured. Fortunately, an infant in one of the vehicles was uninjured. So much for a fun holiday.
All this is to say, “Slow down, people!” Main isn’t Indy. 32nd Street isn't Indy. 160 isn’t Indy. Is your life, or someone else’s life, worth ending because you’re in a bloody hurry? Get over yourself. Quit driving like your head’s in a “dark” place.
