Wendt ‘a new generation’ for Council

I met Harrison about three years ago and realized immediately that he was a stand-up guy. Since then, I have watched his growing passion for the City of Durango.

His interests in wanting to be on the Council are in the areas of affordable housing, infrastructure and essential services, and sustainability. He is in his 20s. He cares deeply about keeping our young people in our community.

Harrison wants the students at Fort Lewis College to find a place to live so they don’t have to live in their cars. Yes, there are students living in their cars. When he came to Durango in 2017 to attend FLC, he was one of these people who had to find a place to live, a job and attend college. It was not easy.

By 2020, Harrison knew that he wanted Durango to be his home. He got involved in politics and advocacy by serving on the organizing committee of the Southwest Movement for Black Lives. Since then, he has honed his listening skills to help him understand what citizens want.

I believe Harrison Wendt will bring a new generation to our Council.

I talked about his passion for affordable housing because I live across from Purple Cliffs and watched the homeless attempt to survive. The problem has not been completely solved and there are people with low-paying jobs who can’t find housing.
