West 24th Street in Durango to close for emergency water valve repair

Drivers will be able to reach Durango High School

The city will start emergency repairs on a water valve on north Main Avenue in front of Durango High School Friday morning and the work will disrupt traffic.

The Colorado Department of Transportation crews will help with the project, with excavation expected to start at 3 a.m. Friday, Utilities Director Steve Salka said.

Fresh concrete will be poured Saturday morning and the project is expected to wrap up Sunday, he said.

Crews with Acme Concrete Paving, who are resurfacing the road, will do the concrete work for the city.

The leaking valve was discovered Monday when crews repaired a water main in front of the high school, he said.

It must be fixed because water could not be controlled and the high school and businesses would likely lose water service.

No one is expected to be without water during the repair, he said.

Starting Friday morning, West 24th Street will be closed at the intersection with north Main Avenue. North Main Avenue will remain open and drivers will be able to access the high school using East 24th Street

West 24th Street will be closed during the entire repair. Southbound traffic on Main Avenue will be diverted to the center lanes.
