West History

100 Years Ago: “American girls have a worldwide reputation for beauty, but at the same time there are girls in our cities who possess neither beauty of face nor form. This is because they suffer from nervousness, the result of disorders of the womanly organism. Dark circles under the eyes, crow’s feet and a straight figure without feminine curves are all caused by these problems. Take Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription, an old remedy of proven worth.”

75 YEARS AGO: “Seven draftees leaving soon: The names of seven of the nine draftees called from La Plata County to report at the local office Oct. 19 have been designated. They are: George Erickson, John Becay, Paul Smith, John Kirkton and Joe Martinez of Durango, and Elmer Vasquez and Abel Romero of Ignacio.”

50 YEARS AGO: “Gun club sets sighting-in days: The Durango Gun Club located one mile west on U.S. 160 will hold sighting-in days this weekend for all hunters of the area. The range will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday with club members on hand to help hunters properly sight-in their rifles.”

25 YEARS AGO: “Saturday Durango Police records: Theft of four Moroccan knives valued at $500 from Morning Star Boutique, 801 Main Ave., reported 2:30 p.m.; drunk man allegedly chased a woman with a knife along East Fourth Ave., reported 3:43 p.m.”
