Western State’s counterpunch KO’s Skyhawks

Sometimes, it’s the counterpunch that lands hardest.

The No. 5 Fort Lewis College women’s soccer team found out the hard way Friday, giving up a pair of goals on the counterattack to suffer a 2-0 loss against Western State in Gunnison.

The Skyhawks (6-1-0, 2-1-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) held a 21-6 edge in shots and a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal but couldn’t keep the Mountaineers (4-3-0, 1-2-0 RMAC) from punching in a pair.

Elise Boisnard scored both goals for the Mountaineers, once in the 52nd minute and again in the 80th.

“I think we got caught trying to bump high to put pressure on a few times, and that was really what created the domino effect of us getting caught out in the back,” FLC head coach Damian Clarke said.

“She’s a good player,” he said of Boisnard. “She was good enough, obviously, on the day.”

After not allowing a goal in the first five games of the season, a typically stout FLC defense has conceded three times in two games, and the Skyhawks no longer are unbeaten. They’ll need to refocus quickly before taking on CSU-Pueblo at noon Sunday.

“I think in all reality we’ve gotten the monkey off our back in the last two games,” Clarke said. “We finally got scored on; now we’ve lost a game. Nothing else can happen. I think, in all reality, these are the things – you have to grow as a team in these moments.”
