Wetlands restoration event offered Saturday

Mountain Studies Institute and Southwest Chapter of the Colorado Native Plant Society will hold a field trip and volunteer re-vegetation event at 8 a.m. Saturday at the largest iron fen in North America, called the Chattanooga, which is located on the west side of U.S. Highway 550 north of Silverton before Red Mountain Pass.

Participants will meet at Animas City Park, 3274 East Second Ave., then drive to Chattanooga, where, after less than a one-mile hike, MSI personnel will help identify wetland plants and provide information about wetland restoration. Project sponsors Amanda Kuenzi and Anthony Culpepper with Mountain Studies Institute will lead the field trip.

Those who attend should bring waterproof footwear, a light rain jacket and a lunch. Attendance is limited to 12 people and $8 per person is asked for carpool drivers.

To register, email Amanda at amandakuenzi@hotmail.com.
