What happens here becomes our headlines

I am writing in response to Dennis Pierce’s letter to the editor, “A question about Herald border coverage,” (Herald, Dec. 12).

During the Biden administration, most immigration activity was happening at the southern border, I imagine the Herald relied on national news sources. Our local immigrant community was working and contributing quietly.

What’s changed is enforcement. Under the current administration, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations have become far more visible in our communities. The tactics used by ICE have raised a lot of questions. When local families and workplaces are directly affected, that becomes local news. The increase in coverage reflects what’s happening here in Durango.
