SHAUN STANLEY/Durango Herald file

Election Day is just weeks away. Here’s what voters need to know to ensure their ballots are cast and counted:

What’s on the ballot?

La Plata County voters will choose among candidates for president, U.S. Senate, Congressional District 3, State House District 59, state board of education, regent of the University of Colorado, and county commissioner districts 2 and 3. Two offices, 6th Judicial District Attorney and county surveyor, are uncontested. Voters also will decide if Colorado Court of Appeals judges and Supreme Court justices, and district judges will be retained.

Statewide, there are five proposed constitutional amendments and three statutory amendments.

Local ballot items include property tax increases for improvements to Durango-La Plata County Airport, county roads and bridges, Bayfield School District and Durango School District 9-R.

A sample ballot can be found attached to this article at durangoherald.com, or online at www.laplatacountyclerk.org.

How do I register to vote?

Citizens can register up to and on Nov. 8, Election Day. Oct. 17 is the last day to register through the Voter Registration Drive. After that, citizens can register by mail or in-person.

When do ballots go out?

The La Plata County Clerk & Recorder will mail ballots to registered voters on Oct. 17. Voters are asked to use a first-class postage stamp to return ballots. Voters can get a ballot in the mail if they are registered by Oct. 31.

The election office must receive ballots by 7 p.m. Nov. 8, so voters are advised to mail ballots no later than Oct. 31. After that, citizens can drop them off, or they can vote in-person.

Where can I drop off my ballot?

There are five, 24-hour drop off locations in the county:

Bayfield Town Hall, 1199 Bayfield Parkway

Farmers Fresh Market, 535 Goddard Ave., Ignacio

La Plata County Administration Building, 1101 East Second Ave., Durango

La Plata County Clerk & Recorder’s Office, 98 Everett St., Durango

Where and when can I vote in-person?

Starting Oct. 24, voters can drop off ballots or vote in-person at the clerk’s office or Bayfield Town Hall.

On Nov. 4, 5, 7 and 8, an additional polling center and voter services will open at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.
