A pair of lamps can be ordinary, but if they’re made from old piano legs, they become extraordinary.
These lamps actually exist and were made by artist Jonas Grushkin. The pair will be up for auction at KDUR’s 19th annual Furniture As Art fundraiser, which will be held Thursday at Durango Arts Center.
Artists have contributed pieces for both a live and silent auction, and offerings run the gamut from stained glass to lamps to mirrors and tables. People who have contributed pieces for the live auction this year include: Chris Clemmons, Shannon Cruise, Amy Felker, John Ford, Jeremy Gable, Jonas Grushkin, Chris Haas, Tom Hahl, Miki Harder, Tom Joyner, Janet Kenna, Jack Leggett, Noah Leggett, Lindsay Mark, Maureen May, Gavin McCalden, Monica McManus, Lisa Pedolsky, Marie Rolfing, Bryan Saren, Noah Stotz and Eric Way.
Silent auction contributors include: Vanessa Bohaty, Dan Groth, Anthony Holmquist, Tom Kipp, Helen Marshall, Megan Maurillo, Jeff McGarvin, Deb Morgan, Chayse Romero, Jim Ruback, Shanti Savage and Rebecca Turner.
Furniture As Art is the biggest fundraiser that happens outside the radio station and off the air, said Bryant Liggett, KDUR station manager.
“It’s important because all of this just goes to our operating budget, and it just ensures the safety that KDUR will be around for a while,” Liggett said. “It’s getting more and more expensive to run radio stations, everything being computer-based. This is just money that will ensure that we continue to purchase our programming, pay our satellite fees. It just helps keep the lights on.”
And the radio station that sits right up the hill at Fort Lewis College and features DJs you probably know, helps residents keep up with what’s going on here and offers people outside the Durango bubble a look into our lives, Liggett said.
“It’s a direct tie to the community that the radio station is in. If you want to learn something about a community, like a local band or something, you would go to KDUR. I think we do that better than digital streaming services,” he said. “What KDUR does is it gives people a glimpse of the Durango community and the people who live here.”
