When will student achievement become the priority?

The release of the 2025 CMAS scores should make every parent in our community stop and think. While officials are quick to celebrate modest gains since the pandemic, they seem to ignore an important truth: scores were already on the decline before COVID-19 ever disrupted classrooms. In other words, we were falling behind long before we had an excuse.

Today’s numbers show that too many of our kids are still not meeting grade-level expectations in math, science, and even reading. This is not a reflection of our teachers – many of whom work tirelessly – or of our parents, who want the best for their children. The problem lies elsewhere. We have to ask the hard questions: Is it the priorities of this school board? Is the focus being pulled away from academics and student achievement?

Something has to change. Our kids deserve better than stagnant or declining results year after year. It’s time for leadership that will put education – not politics, not ideology – at the center of our schools.

If we want stronger outcomes, we must be willing to hold our leaders accountable and insist on a school system that truly prepares our children for the future.
