Where’s Waldo?
Soon, at the state tournament.
Durango High School golfer Reily Waldo won a four-hole playoff at the regional tournament Tuesday at River Valley Ranch in Carbondale to earn the region’s final spot to the CHSAA Class 4A Girls Golf State Championships.
“It was awesome,” Waldo said in a phone call with The Durango Herald. “One of the best moments of my life.
“I was really nervous, but I just had to stay focused and kind of just breathe.”
Waldo’s 96 earned her a spot in the playoff against Eagle Valley.
Montrose won the tournament with a 357 team score, and Taylor Walters of Rifle was the medalist with a 74.
Durango was “middle of the pack” at 396, DHS head coach Kirk Rawles said.
“Each golfer kind of ran into their own different issues,” Rawles said.
The deep, wet sand traps were the biggest challenge, he said.
“It’d take them more than one stroke to get out of the sand, which made it kind of difficult” Rawles said.
Brooke Kniffin shot a second-best 98 for DHS, Natalie Lyon shot 100, and sister Haleigh Lyon shot a 102.
State is May 20-21 at Broken Tee in Englewood.
