In 1980, I arrived in La Plata County to begin a new chapter as CEO of Burns National Bank (currently Bank of Colorado). Our core lending was in business, construction and development, and we financed many projects throughout Southwest Colorado. I have always been pro development and a believer in balanced growth. Just as importantly, I have long championed transparency in public policy discussions.
Over the past few months, the Herald has published several ads and comments criticizing La Plata County, its attorney, and the planning and building office. The group behind these ads calls itself the Code Rights Project, and its spokesperson is Jack Turner. The ads do not disclose who funds them or the group’s actual objective beyond removing the county attorney. Turner has run for county commissioner twice without success. All of my dealings over many years with our county attorney have been excellent.
What I – and many others – would like to see is full disclosure of any connection between Code Rights Project and the proposed development at the junction of Trimble Lane and the Animas River. Are the two entities intertwined? Additionally, are the investors in the RV project past contributors to any of Turner’s BOCC campaigns?
