Chances for owning a home in Durango are disappearing, and many of us can’t even make rent. We’ve made some progress, but Durango needs new solutions and deeper commitment to create affordable housing options.
Shirley Gonzales brings the fresh eye and considerable experience we need. After eight years on the San Antonio City Council – another gentrifying city with twice the problems we may ever have – some folks would be ready to step back from leadership. But not Shirley – she is by nature committed to serving the public.
She does her homework, researching academic understandings and successes in other cities. Then she brainstorms options for new approaches and funding, welcoming new thinking until she finds the best solutions for a problem. She’s a careful listener and great team player.
Her focus areas include housing for all income brackets; enhanced multimodal transportation (which makes more housing options within reach); affordable child care; protecting our vulnerable communities and our natural spaces; and raising new sources of revenue.
Shirley is representative of the Durango population – like many Durangoans, she is a parent and a member of the local small-business community. She’s committed to enabling younger generations – and all of us – to continue to live in Durango. We need her effective leadership on City Council as it tackles new horizons.
