Wildfire contained near well pad east of Bayfield

Plane sent to assess fire
Firefighters with the Upper Pine River Fire Protection District and San Juan National Forest contained a fire east of Bayfield.

A lightning-sparked wildfire burning 5 miles east of Bayfield near a well pad was contained Monday evening.

The fire burned about a tenth of an acre north of mile marker 107 on U.S. Highway 160 before crews controlled it, said Fire Chief Bruce Evans with Upper Pine River Fire Protection District.

The fire was likely started by lightning on Saturday and flared up Monday afternoon, Evans said. It was reported about 5:30 p.m. when it torched a tree, he said.

The Alta Hotshots working on the 256 Fire, also east of Bayfield, could see the fire flare up and came to help fight it with Upper Pine staff, he said.

“Everybody converged,” he said.

A plane was called in to help assess the fire, said Chris Tipton, fire management officer for the Columbine District of the San Juan National Forest.

No homes or other structures were immediately threatened, he said.
