Fire Adapted Durango, a partnership between the city of Durango Parks and Recreation Department and fire experts, will begin wildfire mitigation work along Powerline Trail in SkyRidge Open Space starting Wednesday, depending on weather and fire conditions.
The work, consisting of manual thinning of hazardous fuels and piling in windrows, is the beginning of a multi-phase project focused on mitigating wildfire risk within the Durango Wildland Urban Interface, areas where human-made improvements are built close to, or within, natural terrain and flammable vegetation.
SkyRidge Open Space and Powerline Trail will remain open to the public, but users should be aware that Durango Fire Protection District, Colorado State Forest Service and/or Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control staff and vehicles will be in the area. Removal of piled fuels will occur at a later time with advance public notice.
