Wildfires cause hazy skies in Southwest Colorado

Winds blow smoke from Arizona and New Mexico

Multiple wildfires burning in Arizona and New Mexico can be blamed for hazy skies Sunday and Monday across Southwest Colorado, according to the National Weather Service.

The main fire burning is the Tinder Fire in Central Arizona, said Andrew Lyons, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.

The Tinder Fire was 8,632 acres in size and 0 percent contained as of Monday morning. The fire started Friday in Coconino County.

Two fires in Western New Mexico also are contributing to smoke in the region:

The Diener Canyon Fire was 9,338 acres and 95 percent contained. The Bluewater Fire was 3,473 acres and 90 percent contained. A storm is expected to move into the region Tuesday, bringing rain and lightning.

Weather forecasters are calling for a 50 to 70 percent chance of rain Tuesday and Wednesday, and the area should be dry by Friday, Lyons said.
