Wildland fire burns several acres in western La Plata County

Blaze started in 9000 block of County Road 136; cause unknown

Several acres of private land burned Friday near County Road 136 in western La Plata County, fire officials said.

Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District crews were called around 2:30 p.m. to the 9000 block of Country Road 136 for the fire that had burned about an acre of land, said La Plata Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jeff Blevans.

“They’re getting it knocked down,” Blevans said about 5:15 p.m. Friday. “It’s more under control.”

The cause of the fire was unknown.

If the fire grows, it is expected to move northwest, Blevans said. One home was in the potential path of the fire, but flames were more than a quarter-mile away. A family living in the home was notified of the fire, Blevans said.
