I have been following the actions and decisions of the school board and am very concerned. It seems their resolution on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion adopted Jan. 26 will take precedent over academic achievement.
I retired 10 years ago after years teaching primary (K-three) grades for 35 years. Our goals were always to promote the development of successful, self-confident, caring achievers. Academic achievement was important. Test scores mattered. The “3 Rs” were our core curriculum, while other curricular areas taught children to be proud of their uniqueness and personal contributions to their classmates. We went a little overboard with the “Everyone gets a trophy” philosophy, but it offered a feeling of participation.
It seems the current guidelines are mandating that our students be ashamed of their inherited differences and abilities and instead to focus on the differences between races, religions and genders in negative ways.
I still believe our educational systems’ foremost job is to give our children a strong academic and social foundation. I would be interested in knowing what 9-R is planning to do to improve the low academic scores in math and English language arts/literacy as reflected in the 2018 and 2019 overall results: https://bit.ly/3keGX5H
