Will snow show in Durango this weekend?

Storm predicted to bring heavy rain
Trees are in bloom, it’s short sleeve weather, and there may be snow headed to the region. It must be spring in Durango, where a pedestrian crosses 11th street along Main Avenue on Wednesday afternoon.

A cold front moving into the Four Corners Friday is expected to bring heavy rain, with National Weather Service forecasters in Grand Junction predicting the chance of widespread snow in higher elevations.

Dennis Phillips said precipitation will begin in Durango late Friday afternoon, with rainfall picking up Saturday through Monday.

He said it’s too early to tell where snow may accumulate, but latest data show a chance of snow in elevations from 7,000 to 8,500 feet.

“It’s tricky right now where that range is,” Phillips said. “But definitely you’ll see snow accumulation up on the passes and higher elevations.”

High temperatures are expected to remain in the 50s throughout the weekend in the lower elevations of the region.

The storm system is expected to bring unsettled weather to most of Colorado through the weekend, including the possibility of rain, snow, thunderstorms and hail.

“There really won’t be anybody that won’t be untouched,” Phillips said.

On the Front Range, the foothills are expected to be hit with heavy snow, while Denver is predicted to see a mix of rain and snow. Yet, Phillips said with a cold front moving in, that could change.

Heavy snow is expected to fall all along the central and northern Rockies, including parts of eastern Utah, Phillips said.

Northern New Mexico will likely stay dry, but higher elevations might see some precipitation.

“It’ll be interesting to see how this actually plays out because things are sure to change,” Phillips said.

“This is a real wet system that will probably bring a good amount of snow to a lot of higher elevation places and a lot of rain in lower places. This is just a good spring storm.”

Phillips said sunshine and dry temperatures are expected to return on Tuesday. Then, the next round of storms will hit late next week.
