Williams is SWL’s top player

Tony Williams led a potent Durango High School boys soccer team from the midfield, and the captain of the league champions received a top honor.

Williams, a DHS senior, was named the Southwestern League Player of the Year after he scored 10 goals and assisted on 13 others for a total of 33 points.

The Demons went 13-3-1 during the fall season and eventually lost in the second round of the Class 4A state tournament.

DHS won the SWL via tiebreaker against Montrose thanks to a better goal aggregate. DHS head coach Dalon Parker and Montrose head coach Jim Pavlich shared Coach of the Year.

Joining Williams on the All-SWL first team were freshman forward Elijah Fenton, senior goalkeeper Lars Schwaebe and senior midfielder Dylan McClain.

Fenton led the team in goals (16) and total points (39). He ranked in the top 25 in the state, regardless of classification, in points and goals.

Named to the All-SWL second team for DHS was senior defenders Logan Graham and Roberto Razo.

Montrose had three players named to the first team and three to the second team.

Though the Demons won the league and players such as Fenton and Williams showcased their talent across the state, the Demons went without an all-state selection. Meanwhile, Montrose placed Brayden Reese, a senior midfielder, on the all-state first team, as well as junior midfielder Jose Cervantes and senior defender Chase Darling on the all-state second team.
