Winter expected to make a comeback

Storm could leave 2 feet of new snow in high country
Get the shovels and snoplows ready, as winter is expected to return this week, with anywhere up to 2 feet of new snow expected in the Southwest Colorado high country.

Don’t be fooled by Sunday’s blue skies and mild temperatures, as winter is set to return this week with snow accumulations in the high country around Southwest Colorado expected to hit 2 feet, according to the National Weather Service.

Julie Malingowski, a meteorologist for the weather service in Grand Junction, said precipitation is expected to start Monday morning, and gradually pick up into the afternoon.

The strongest chance for snow accumulation around Durango will be Monday overnight into Tuesday, with the possibility for the entire Southwest Colorado region to experience heavy snowfall.

Less than half an inch of accumulation is expected Monday, but overnight though Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service forecasts says up to 3 inches could accumulate in Durango.

Malingowski said that in Durango the storm likely will start as a rain and snow mixture, but as the weather pattern moves into Monday night, precipitation should switch to snow.

In the high country, Malingowski said estimates show nearly 2 feet of snow could fall.

“It looks pretty dang good up there,” she said.
