A winter storm warning is in effect from midnight Sunday to noon Tuesday for elevations above 8,500 feet as a weather pattern moves into San Juan Mountains that is expected to bring 8 to 14 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service.
The towns listed in the weather advisory include Hesperus, Rico and Silverton.
“The good news for you guys is this storm’s taking more of a southern track,” said Megan Stackhouse, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Grand Junction. “So the southern San Juans are definitely going to see best impacts from it.”
For elevations above 8,500 feet, Monday temperatures during the day will hover around the mid- to low 30s, with overnight lows down to the mid- to low 20s. Winds will be out of the southwest, with expected gusts up to 35 mph.
In Durango, Monday temperatures during the day will remain above freezing throughout the storm, at around 45 degrees, with overnight lows in the mid-30s.
“For the most part, (Durango) is going to see rain,” Stackhouse said. “But you can’t rule out a wintery mix in there, especially (Monday) night and (Tuesday) morning.”
After the storm, Stackhouse said the region will return to dry, warm temperatures for Wednesday and Thursday, heading into the weekend.
She said the region as a whole is in a weather pattern where storms could develop with some frequency.
