Winter Warrior a national qualifier

Snowshoe race Saturday at Nordic Center
Kara Grubis finishes last year’s Winter Warrior snowshoe race at the Durango Nordic Center.

The fifth annual Winter Warrior snowshoe race Saturday will serve as a regional qualifier for the sport’s national championship. And, emphasized race director Steve Ilg, it will benefit the youths of the Durango Nordic Ski Team.

The Winter Warrior will begin at 10 a.m. at the Durango Nordic Center. Registration will open at 9 a.m., and the race fee is $25. There will be 5- and 10-kilometer races, as well as a kids dash.

Ilg said that low snow coverage will not affect the event. He said he has decided to allow “all forms of snow traction” this year, which mainly will include spikes or studs, such as YakTrax, that fit over a boot or shoe. Those hoping to use the Winter Warrior to qualify for the national event, however, must use snowshoes.

The United States Snowshoe Association-sanctioned race course must meet several requirements, including national-class terrain; course preparation, course markings, timing and emergency services; and course marshal criteria.

The national event is Feb. 27-March 1 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Raffle prizes also will be offered at the Durango race. Ilg said more than $2,300 worth of prizes are available. For more info or to register, visit http://winterwarrior10k.com.
