Winter weather set to return to Southwestern Colorado

Rain Sunday forecasted to turn to snow by Monday

Put away the shorts and pull your boots back out of the closet as winter returns to the higher elevations of Southwest Colorado on Sunday.

After an unusually warm and dry February, the next round of storms appears to be headed our way, according to the Grand Junction office of the National Weather Service.

“As far as the San Juans (Mountains) go, we’re expecting 5 to 10 inches of snow,” meteorologist Julie Malingowski said. “And it’s going to be very dense, real thick, almost like cement snow.”

There is a 90 percent chance of snow at Purgatory Resort on Sunday and Sunday night, dropping to an 80 percent chance Monday. It’s arriving just in time for the first spring breaks.

In town, Malingowski said, Durangoans can expect mostly rain Sunday.

“The rain will turn to snow on Monday morning when a cold front passes through,” she said. “We’re not expecting a lot of snow for you. We expect it to stick to the grass but not much on pavement.”

The area is definitely turning to a wetter weather pattern, Malingowski said.

“There’s another possibility next weekend,” she said, “Snow is possible in the mountains, but we’re not confident on timing or amounts yet.”
