Winter weather stalls Ignacio track and field

With wild winter-like weather hammering much of the extended Four Corners region last weekend, track-and-field teams' travel plans, for the most part, either needed reworking or were scrubbed altogether.

And Ignacio High School was no exception.

Sending barely a handful of athletes to last Saturday's 59th annual Bloomfield Invitational, IHS came away with only two team points and a tenth-place boys' team finish-thanks to thrower Natoni Cundiff's fifth-place, 123'0" effort in the discus.

Only 5A Bloomfield's Tim Moore (127'3"), 6A Farmington, N.M., Piedra Vista's Matthew Compton (129'9"), 5A Aztec, New Mexico's Brady Moffet (133'0"), and PVHS' Talon Ball (137'8") threw farther.

IHS' Mitchell Neil took 17th in the event, peaking out at 104 feet, two inches.

In the shot put, Cundiff took 15th with a best heave of 36 feet, six inches. Topping out at 46'8" downrange, BHS' Colton Barker earned first place, with Aztec's Bryce Bell taking second (46'5") and Moore third (42'6").

Upon Curtis Clement Memorial Track inside Bobcat Stadium, Ignacio's Sam Abendroth was 41st in the 100-meter dash, clocking 13.66 seconds, and he also took 36th in the 400 (1:04.26).

According to the results, zero IHS girls made the trip into the Land of Enchantment, where PVHS won the Invite's title with 142 points. 5A Kirtland, N.M., Central was a distant second with 74, and AHS was third with 67.

Aztec's boys were victorious with 81 points, with KCHS and 5A Farmington, N.M., tying for a close second with 78 each. BHS then followed in fourth with 69 points, and PVHS rounded out the top five with 66.

Up next for Ignacio will be this Saturday's Terry Alley Invitational in Pagosa Springs.
