Wirth takes pro MMA record to 3-0

BHS alum dominates 3 rounds in Towoac
Kevin Wirth

Best way to win a fight?

Leave no doubt.

Preceding the main event last Saturday in the sixth professional bout on the King of the Cage: Warlords II slate, Bayfield High School alumnus Kevin Wirth rumbled for three five-minute rounds at 135 pounds. He emerged as the unanimous-decision winner over Cristobal "El Mosquito" Chavez-Davila at Ute Mountain Casino.

"A tough kid, brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu-he owns his own dojo-and he had an undefeated amateur record," Wirth, representing Durango Martial Arts, recalled Tuesday afternoon, just two days before turning 30. "So he's an up-and-comer! We'd fought once before. I've only been dropped twice in my career and both of them - once as an amateur, once in this fight - were by this kid!"

"I managed to hurt him a little bit in the first round, so he was fighting a little scared, reacting to my fake attacks, my feints. And once he started doing that I was able to pick him apart for the rest of the fight."

Coming off a three-round UD over Nicholas Gonzalez at King of the Cage: Starbound on April 8, Wirth improved to 3-0 while Chavez-Davila, from El Paso, Tex., took a second straight loss after four wins beginning his pro career.

"It was good, one of the bloodiest fights I've ever been a part of," Wirth said with a slight laugh. "That kid is tough, wouldn't go down, but he was bleeding all over the place."

Having celebrated his own 30th birthday four days earlier, Albuquerque-based Fit NHB member Steve Hanna (8-2) concluded the night in Towaoc pounding Shem Prieto, 28 and of El Paso, and earning a first-round technical knockout - his fourth consecutive conquest - in only two minutes at 170.

"It's always good being on the same card as that guy," Wirth said of the Bayfield-raised Hanna, formerly a Durango Martial Arts fixture. "We don't hang out much anymore, so that's a little extra treat when we get to."
