There is an ad for Herald motor route carriers in the classifieds that makes one wonder about the economics of the recent publication frequency reduction.
One of the routes goes from the Iron Horse Inn to the Glacier Club and covers 70 miles. According to the ad, the route takes four to six hours and papers must be picked up by 2 a.m. at the Herald loading dock. Since this is now a four day a week job, figuring 20 hours a week, the hourly pay is $13.75 (less deductions). With total mileage of 240 miles per week and figuring it costs a minimum of 12 cents a mile, that’s $33.60 a week plus wear and tear on the vehicle.
In as much as the Herald refused to refund subscription money based on the cutback of delivery of seven days to four, why isn’t this windfall shared with the carriers?
