Ski and snowboard season has arrived to the San Juan Mountains.
Wolf Creek Ski Area will open at 9 a.m. Saturday for its opening day. Chairlifts will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. It will be open weekends only for the time being.
A good storm rolled in earlier in the week to drop 10 inches of snow. Wolf Creek has received 26 inches so far this season to develop a 10-inch midway base.
Earlier in the week, Wolf Creek’s plan was to only open the Nova beginner’s lift with two bunny slopes expected to be open. But the storm and the hard work of the Wolf Creek staff will allow the area to open up two more lifts in Bonanza and Treasure Stoke. Open terrain will include a few intermediate runs such as Charisma, Tranquility, Treasure, Powder Puff Valley and Windjammer. Conditions are described as “very early season.”
Tickets will cost $48 for adults to ride Bonanza and Treasure Stoke. Seniors will cost $31 and the price for kids will be $26.
Anyone wishing only to ride Nova will be charged $28.
The ski school will be available as well as limited menu items at the Wolf Creek Lodge. The Pathfinder bar will be open.
Purgatory Resort will open Nov. 18. Purgatory has not reported any snow totals but has been busy making snow.
Telluride Ski Resort is scheduled to open Nov. 23.
Unfortunately, there is no more snow in the forecast for the San Juan Mountains until late next week.
