Wolfwood Refuge believes in Santa

Wolfwood Refuge, like many other nonprofits, struggled last year and had to make changes. All of our events were canceled, and we are still not in a position to schedule for 2021.

Fortunately, supporters stepped up to help us maintain the refuge via Colorado Gives Day, Facebook initiatives, online donations and checks. We also are grateful to The Durango Herald for their beautiful and sensitive article on the loss of Oakley. The outpouring of pictures, memories and donations were an affirmation of our work and his impact.

Our biggest challenge every year is medical costs. Our goal to clear medical cost by the end of the year seemed unlikely. A Secret Santa came forward on Christmas Eve, contacting our veterinary clinic to inquire what Wolfwood owed. The Secret Santa cleared our bill, which exceeded $10,000. Saying thank you hardly feels adequate.

Maintaining Wolfwood’s aging vehicles is another huge expense. Several volunteers keep our trucks going, however, our ATV was not repairable. This is much needed due to the refuge’s rough terrain and constant use. We received a message that arrangements had been made for us to pick up a new ATV in Durango by a Wolf Angel in memory of their father.

We are exploring different ways to sustain the refuge this year. We are including more special events at the refuge, collaborative efforts with other local nonprofits and extended tour options.

Secret Santas, you changed our life and Wolfwood knows for sure there is a Santa Claus.
