There was a reason Bayfield received a first-place vote in this week's CHSAANow.com Class 3A poll.
Obviously it wasn't enough to put the Wolverines atop the stack, but it did bump the boys into the #6 spot and was well warranted after last Saturday's 27-0, 11-6 destruction of Intermountain League foe Centauri.
In the Falcons' own nest, to boot.
Totaling a ridiculous 10 homers, many over the short, U.S. Highway 285-bordered fence in left, Bayfield improved to 9-2 overall after sweeping its league-opening pair. The team looks to climb higher tomorrow when last season's Great Eight-qualifying Alamosa visits Wolverine Field for two starting at 11 a.m.
For any shot at success in the Pine River Valley, the Mean Moose will have to find some way to cool down the sizzling center of BHS' order, because Centauri (6-7, 2-2 IML) couldn't even dream of doing so.
Junior catcher Kelton McCoy mashed out three home runs, one with the bases loaded, and drove in an amazing 11 runs all told. Classmate Zane Phelps and senior Matt Knickerbocker also went yard two times each, with Knickerbocker showing some switch-hitting power with one dinger left-handed.
The Wolverines bashed 32 hits against losing pitchers Angelo Valdez and Christopher Martin.
Staked to a 12-zip lead after three innings, Knickerbocker earned the Game 1 win on the mound. Junior Brody McGhehey then picked up the 'W' in Game 2 by throwing five frames including Centauri's six-run fifth. Fortunately, he had some runs with which to work; BHS had put across four runs in the first and as many in the third.
THIS WEEK'S TOP TEN (first-place votes in parentheses): 1.Eaton (7), 2.Lamar (2), 3.Greeley University, 4.Gunnison, 5.Arvada Faith Christian, 6.BAYFIELD (1), 7.Brush, 8.Manitou Springs, 9.Gilcrest Valley, 10. Colorado Springs St. Mary's.
