Wolverine boys dominate High Altitude Challenge

BHS wins rescheduled meet in Alamosa

Things just keep getting better and better for the Bayfield boys' track-and-field team.

Even if they had to wait a couple extra days to again prove it.

Competing Tuesday at the rescheduled (from April 29) High Altitude Challenge in Alamosa, the Wolverines piled up an impressive 157 points to win, bettering the hosts' 126 and outclassing 2A Sanford's third-place 57. All told, 20 teams logged at least one point at the gathering, but BHS was on a whole other level.

The junior hurdling tandem of Carl Heide and Dax Snooks crossed 1-2 (15.30 and 16.16 seconds, respectively) in the 110-meter edition, and finished 1-5 (Heide 40.17, Snooks 44.87) in the 300m specialty.

Bayfield's 4x100m and 4x200 relays were also victorious, clocking 44.55 seconds and 1:34.60 respectively, and the 4x800 was second in 8:48.03.

Snooks was second in the high jump, beaten out at 5'10" by Sanford's Brady Lenz.

The pole-vaulting trio of Colton Fine, Chad Winkler and Dawson French went 2-3-4 with bests of 10'7", 10'7" and 9'1".

Ethan Tate took third in the 200, clocking 23.77 seconds, and Gus Roberts was fourth in the 400 with his 53.10. At longer distance, Ben Clarke's 2:24.93 in the 800 landed him in 13th, while Rylan Ross placed likewise with a 6:00.34 in the 1,600 meters.

Sam Westbrook was tops in the shot put (48'5") with Ryan Phelps (45'10") close behind in third and David Hawkins (42'7") fifth, and the big senior also won the discus with a 139'2" maximum. Phelps placed second at 136'2" and Hunter Killough came in fifth at 125'5".

Ignacio's Natoni Cundiff was ninth (117'6") after coming in 14th in the shot (36'10"), but the Bobcats' best showing came from Elco Garcia, Jr., who took third in the 3,200m run. The freshman's 10:56.78 trailed only the 10:55.23 of Alamosa's Miguel Baltazar and the 10:37.13 of Pagosa Springs' Jacob Hughes.

All told, IHS earned 12 team points and finished 15th in the standings.

The Bobcats' 4x400m relay took fourth in 3:52.08, with their 4x2 eighth (1:44.41) and 4x1 tenth (48.59).
