The Bayfield High School wrestling team wrestled five squads on Saturday at the Aztec Tiger Duals in New Mexico and beat three of them.
The Wolverines started the competition with a 30-30 tiebreaker-win over Monticello (Utah), getting wins at six weights while Monticello won five. Deegan Barnes (172) and Jason Michaeli (145) both pinned their opponents for Bayfield. Reese Appenzeller (133) and Zayden Cundiff (139) won close decisions and Keaton Pickering and Estevan Gonzales (107) took forfeits.
Against Kirtland, only five matches were contested, and Bayfield won all of them to score a 60-12 victory over the Broncos.
Porter Sutherlin (114), Michaeli and Caelan Ramos (160) pinned their opponents while Candeleria won 4-3 and Jordan Cundiff (285) won a 6-1 decision.
Bayfield then took on Bloomfield, but lost the dual 57-17. Candelaria and Barnes picked up pins while Keaton Pickering scored a 21-5 technical fall for Bayfield, but the Bobcats won the rest of the wights.
Against Farmington, Barnes picked up another pin and Pickering another technical fall, 20-5, while Michaeli also pinned his foe, but the Scorpions took the dual 52-23.
The Wolverines, however, finished strong and beat Albuquerque Academy 48-30 in their final dual of the tournament.
Pickering pinned his opponent late in the first period to finish his day 5-0. Barnes went 5-0 after pinning his opponent midway through the first.
Gonzales and Michaeli also pinned their Albuquerque Academy opponents for BHS.
Michaeli and Candelaria both went 4-1 on the day. Gonzales finished 3-2 and Zayden Cundiff 2-1.
The Wolverines will next wrestle on Saturday at the Butch Melton Classic in Ignacio.
