Wolverines can’t stop the Wildcats’ late surge

Fruita Monument erases a 15-point halftime deficit in victory

A big halftime lead wasn’t large enough for the Bayfield High School boys basketball team Friday against Fruita Monument.

The Wolverines lost 73-70 in Round 2 of the Rumble in the Jungle tournament in Aztec.

BHS (3-3) led 40-28 at halftime, but the Wildcats cut it to six by the start of the fourth quarter.

Fruita Monument tied the game at 65 with 1 minute, 13 seconds remaining and made its free throws to seal the win.

Preston Hardy led BHS with 18 points, while Trey Lange had 16 and Dillon Hoselton 11.

Fruita pressed for the entire game, and the Wolverines broke it well in the beginning.

Their lead faded when they started passing the ball sideways instead of attacking forward.

“All of a sudden out of nowhere we couldn’t seem to remember all of the things that worked well until then,” BHS head coach Randy Stephens said. “It was a step forward in the right direction, we just need to finish the game out.”

The Wolverines won their tournament opener 72-46 against Bloomfield on Thursday and will continue tournament play at 3 p.m. Saturday against Piedra Vista High School.
