For the first time anyone at Bayfield can remember, the Wolverines found themselves ranked first in the maxpreps.com power rankings.
Saturday the Bayfield High School baseball team proved why it deserves that spot, too.
The Wolverines scored 27 combined runs and held the Piedra Vista Panthers junior varsity scoreless with just three total hits across a doubleheader Saturday in Piedra Vista.
BHS won Game 1 11-0.
BHS won Game 2 16-0.
I really think were starting to come around now, BHS head coach Tom Horton said of his 10-2 Wolverines. I just hope it continues, and I think it will. Its that time of the year. Its coming together. Theyre really starting to gel as a team.
The team got it done, but in Game 1, Allec Rodriguez got the glory.
Rodriguez, whod hardly played baseball at all in his life, Horton said, has served as a courtesy runner for Bayfield. Saturday he got a shot at left field and an at bat. He also got the walkoff single that mercy-ruled the Panthers and ended the game.
Pitcher working him over, down like 0-2, and he worked one to right field, Horton said. It was really neat.
Clay Miller was a big reason for the lead that made that possible, though. He threw five innings for one hit with 12 strikeouts and two walks.
Matthew Knickerbocker added some offense, going 3-for-4 for two runs and two runs batted in, while Miller went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs.
In Game 2, it was Hunter Funkhousers turn to work the batters. He threw five innings for two hits and three strikeouts.
We played really good defense behind both of them to get the zeros, Horton said.
The offense kept coming, too.
Knickerbocker went 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs, Miller went 3-for-4 for with two runs and four RBIs, Kelton McCoy also went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs, and Austin McMenimen hit a double and a triple, going 3-for-4.
The game orginally was scheduled to be played in Bayfield, but the field was too muddy.
The Wolverines will host Montezuma-Cortez at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
