Wolverines’ girls soccer rediscovers its ‘heart’

Manitou Springs ‘too big, fast, strong’ in playoff W

Everyone on the Bayfield High School girls soccer team was crying after the Wolverines’ 6-0 loss to No. 9 Manitou Springs in the first round of the Colorado High School Activities Assocation Class 3A playoff game in Colorado Springs.

“No one was crying because we lost,” BHS head coach Jen Zelinski said. “They were just crying because it was over.”

The 24th-seeded Wovlerines couldn’t keep up with the Mustangs’ speed.

“They were just bigger, faster, stronger,” Zelinski said. “We had chances to score, just had really fast forwards; they were twice as fast as our defenders.”

Zelinski still was pleased with her team’s effort after thinking they lacked heart in their final two games of the regular season.

“We found our heart again,” she said. “I was happy.”

The Wolverines played the entire season with a freshman in goal and youth across the board. There were five seniors on their roster compared to 10 underclassmen.

“No one was discouraged,” Zelinski said. “Our goal is to make it to playoffs every year. We’ll be back next year.”
