Wolverines have no trouble breaking Broncos

Lightning halts play at half, BHS wins 6-0
Wolverines getting wet? Yep, but they're happy after a 6-0 win over Kirtland on Saturday.

With four minutes remaining in the first half last Saturday, lightning accompanying a fast-arriving storm necessitated a pause in play between Bayfield and visiting Kirtland Central.

And for the foundering Broncos, who came to Wolverine Country Stadium standing 1-9 overall after lopsided NMAA District 1-5A losses at Aztec (5-nil) and Farmington (8-1), it was about the best thing which could have happened to end a four-match away stretch.

Already trailing the Wolverines by a margin much wider than what did them in during their first game back on Aug. 26, KCHS managed to threaten BHS senior goalkeeper Chad Winkler just once. Meanwhile, BHS seniors Colton Fine and Tilden Berriman each logged two goals and an assist, and senior Marcus Isiordia and junior Berman Abdallah-Boehm each scored once in a dominant, though abbreviated 6-nil shutout.

"Coaches agreed to finish the half to make it official," said BHS boss Chris Zoltowski, "and call the game."

Abdallah-Boehm and Armando Lerma also registered one assist apiece as the Wolverines concluded Homecoming Week 2017 protecting their pitch for a third time in four tries to date, and improved to 6-3 overall.

Still 4-3 in the 3A Intermountain, up next for Bayfield will be a 10 a.m. kickoff Saturday at home versus Crested Butte Community School. The Titans, who edged BHS 2-1 two Saturdays ago up in Gunnison County, stand 4-4, 4-2 (one result not yet reported) before their match today at Pagosa Springs (2-8, 2-5).
