Four players registered at least one goal Tuesday as the Bayfield Wolverines recorded their seventh win of the 2022 season. BHS won 5-0 at Alamosa, in preparation for a rematch with Pagosa Springs on Friday away.
Kickoff versus the 3A Southwestern-leading Pirates (9-3, 5-0 SWL) at Golden Peaks Stadium is set for 4 p.m.
“The deficit might be tough to conquer,” head coach Chris Zoltowski said via text message, alluding to the Pirates’ 7-0 victory at BHS back on Sept. 23, “but the boys will be ready.”
Freshman Ayden Casilla scored Bayfield’s lone first-half goal off an assist from senior Shaw Foster. He also tallied the team’s fourth – and last – second-half goal, heading in a Magno Silva crossing pass. Senior Andres Monger converted a feed from freshman Zack Hufnagel to restart the offense after intermission, then Foster (assisted by junior Asher Madonna) and junior Shae Railsback (unassisted) each booted a ball into AHS’ net.
“Shae and Andy have always been a great duo and are the heart of our defense,” Zoltowski said. “Their patience on the back line and constant pressure awarded them both well-deserved goals today.”
“It’s great to see the boys coming together and meshing as a team,” he said. “Watching their selflessness on the field makes me proud to be their coach!”
“I mean, we (players) hang out off the field even more than on the field,” Railsback said in a previous interview. “So I think this chemistry and connection with the whole team just helps the things we do in practice, helps us with games – win or lose – and everything.”
Bayfield improved to 7-2-2 overall, 2-1-0 in league; the Mean Moose sank to 0-13, 0-5 prior to hosting Montezuma-Cortez (1-7, 1-2) on Thursday. M-CHS will travel to 2A Ridgway (6-4 overall) on Saturday before visiting Wolverine Country Stadium for a 6 p.m. start on Tuesday.
Making up for the sides’ weather-postponed Oct. 4 clash in Montezuma County, the Wolverines and Panthers will reconvene at M-CHS at 3:45 p.m. next Thursday to wrap up regular-season play.
