The Bayfield Wolverines committed eight fielding errors but still won Thursday.
Playing in the junior varsity bracket of the Farmington High Invitational, the Bayfield baseball team defeated Piedra Vista’s junior varsity squad 12-11. The two teams combined for 13 errors in the game, and that led to most of the scoring.
Zane Phelps was 2-for-4 at the plate Thursday. He made the hard part of hitting for a cycle look easy by hitting a home run and a triple. He drove in three runs and scored three times.
DHS junior Matthew Knickerbocker also was 2-for-4, as was senior Trey Lange. Knickerbocker scored four times, and Lange had a double that drove in a run.
Knickerbocker started the game on the mound for the Wolverines. He pitched four innings and gave up five hits while walking two and striking out one. Four runs scored while Knickerbocker toed the rubber, but he wasn’t charged with any of them.
Knickerbocker was relieved by Brody McGhehey, who lasted two innings. McGhehey earned three of the seven runs that crossed the plate on his watch while allowing six hits, including one home run.
Kelton McCoy closed the game with a scoreless seventh inning to earn a save. He didn’t allow a hit and struck out one.
Bayfield scored six runs in the third inning after scoring two in the first. The Wolverines tacked on two more runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Piedra Vista’s largest lead was 7-2 after two innings.
Thursday’s win was the second victory of the season for the Wolverines, who have opened with two non-varsity opponents. Bayfield will be back in action in the second round of the tournament Friday afternoon.
